Serafima Ryangina
Serafima Vasilyevna Ryangina (1891, St. Petersburg - 1955, Moscow)〔(Auction catalogue No. 80. ) Shishkin Gallery, 2009, p. 40. Retrieved 6 May 2013. (Archived here. )〕 was a Socialist Realist artist who was designated an Honoured Artist of Russia in 1955.〔(Serafima Ryangina. ) Starov Gallery, 2013. Retrieved 5 May 2013. (Archived here. )〕
Ryangina trained under Dmitry Kardovsky at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts between 1912–18 and 1921–23, and subsequently moved to Moscow where she lived for the rest of her life. From 1924, Ryangina was a member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR).〔
Ryangina's ''Higher and Higher'' (1934), with its image of two young engineers installing electrical cables high above the ground, has been called "an obvious panegyric to the Soviet Second Five Year Plan"〔Holz, Wolfgang. "Allegory and iconography in Socialist Realist painting" in Matthew C. Brown & Brandon Taylor. (Eds.) ''Art of the Soviets: Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in a One-Party State, 1917-1992''. Manchester: Manchester University Press, 1993. p. 81. ISBN 0719037352〕 while others have commented on the extreme vitality and sunny demeanor of the two figures.〔Pitman, Joanna. ''On Blondes''. United States: Bloomsbury, 2008, p. 199. ISBN 1596918799〕 The work received contemporary criticism from Izvestiya for its "chocolate-box sweetness" which made the building of socialism seem like an afternoon outing.〔Taylor, Brandon. "Socialist Realism: To depict reality in its revolutionary development" in Matthew Beaumont, (Ed.) (Adventures in Realism. ) United States: John Wiley, 2008, p. 152.〕
Ryangina's works are found in the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg), and elsewehere in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
